# **What does a WhatsApp username actually do, and what changes if I claim one?**
What a WhatsApp username does, who can find it, whether your number stays private, and what changes for people who already have your number.

**Short answer ** A WhatsApp username is an optional, unique handle that starts with @ and lets someone begin a chat with you without ever seeing your phone number. That is the whole mechanism. If you claim one and share it, a new person types it into WhatsApp's search, lands on your profile, and messages you. Your number stays out of the conversation unless you choose to share it or they already had it. For people who already have your number saved, nothing changes at all: they keep finding you the way they always did, and they still see your number. The username is a second door, not a replacement for the first one. ## The old model: your number was the account For as long as WhatsApp has existed, your phone number has been your identity on the service. You registered with it, your contacts found you through it, and every group you joined broadcast it to the other members. There was no handle to remember, no profile URL to share. If someone wanted to reach you, they needed your digits, and once they had them they could see your profile photo, your about text, and your last-seen status depending on your privacy settings. The username setting doesn't overturn that model. You still register and verify with a phone number, and the number remains the underlying account. What the username adds is a way to be reachable by people who don't have your number and whom you'd rather not give it to. Think of it as a published alias layered on top of the account, not a new account. ## What a username is, exactly It is a unique handle, formatted with an @ at the front, that you claim once and own on your account. Uniqueness matters: only one account can hold a given username, so @maria.fitness belongs to one person globally. You pick it in Settings, under Account, then Username, on your phone. Claiming it costs nothing. It is also optional. If you never set one, your account works exactly as before and nobody can find you by handle because you don't have one. If you set one and later regret it, you can change it or remove it, and the old handle becomes available for someone else to claim. If a stranger types your name into WhatsApp search, they get nothing, because search only matches exact usernames, not display names or phone numbers. The person has to know the handle precisely and type it exactly as you gave it. There are no suggestions, no autocomplete from a public list, no way to browse. This is the single most important thing to understand: a username is only as findable as you make it. If you never tell anyone the handle, it functions like an unlisted number. The practical routes are three. First, they type the exact handle into WhatsApp's search bar and your profile appears. Second, you share them a link, which looks like a web address ending in your handle; tapping it opens a chat with you directly. Third, you show them a QR code from your profile screen and they scan it with their phone. All three land in the same place: a normal chat thread, opened without your number ever being displayed. ## What the other person sees When someone reaches you through your username, they see your display name, your profile photo if you have one visible, and your about text, subject to your existing privacy settings. They do not see your phone number. The chat header shows your name, not your digits. If they later want your number, you have to send it to them explicitly, the same as you would in any conversation. One nuance worth naming: your display name is not your username. The display name is what you've always had, the label shown on your profile and in group member lists. The username is the searchable handle. Someone who knows your display name cannot find you by searching for it. Keep the two straight in your own head, because that separation is what makes the handle useful for privacy. ## What changes for people who already have your number Nothing. This is the part the setting never explains, and it's the part most people worry about. Existing contacts keep seeing you exactly as before: your number in their address book, your name as they saved it, your profile through the same chat thread they've always used. Claiming a username does not hide your number from people who already have it, and it does not change how group membership works. If you join a group, members of that group can still see your phone number, because that is how WhatsApp groups have always worked. So the honest summary is: the username only affects first contact with people who don't have your number. It is a gate at the front door. Everyone already inside the house sees the same rooms they always saw. If your concern is a group admin or a group member seeing your number, a username will not help you; the only lever there is your group participation itself. ## The judgement call: who should claim one If you give your number to strangers as part of your work, a username is a small, free upgrade. A founder answering customer questions, a freelancer taking inquiries, anyone who has ever handed out a personal number to a client and regretted it: the handle lets those conversations start without your number entering the person's contacts, where it lives forever and can be forwarded anywhere. You can change or drop the handle later if it attracts the wrong attention. If you never give your number to strangers, claiming one buys you little. Your number already does everything you need, and an unused handle is just one more thing to keep track of. There is also a squatting consideration: handles are first come, first served, so if you have a business name or personal brand you may want to claim it now even if you don't publish it yet, purely to hold it. There is nothing to enable and no waitlist to join; it arrives with app updates over time. Check that your app is current, and if the setting still isn't there, it isn't available to your account yet. Everything described here applies once it is. When it does appear, the setup takes under a minute: open Settings, tap Account, tap Username, pick a handle, confirm availability, done. You'll also find your shareable link and QR code on the same screen. If a handle you want is taken, you'll need a variation; there is no claiming process or dispute mechanism for names you feel entitled to. ## If you run this for a business The moment you publish a handle on a website, a packaging insert, or an Instagram bio, strangers start conversations without a number attached, and those chats need somewhere to live beyond one founder's phone. A shared inbox on a board, where each conversation has an objective and an agent works the steps, is how a team hands those chats off without losing the thread.
