**Short answer ** A WhatsApp username is a handle people can use to start a chat with you without either side sharing a phone number. That is the entire feature. It does not make you searchable, it does not hide your number on a business account, and it does not change how existing customers reach you. What it does give you is a clean, memorable name for your business on WhatsApp, and because names are globally unique and first-come, the only urgent part is reserving yours before someone else does. Here is what it is, what it is not, and what to do about it in the next ten minutes. ## What a username actually is A username is a short handle that someone can type or tap to open a chat with you. If your handle is riverstonesupply, a customer who has that exact handle can start a conversation with you without ever learning your phone number, and you will not see theirs in the usual way either. The chat works like any other WhatsApp chat after that. That is the whole idea: a way to be reachable by name instead of by number. Everything else people say about usernames is either detail or speculation. If you remember only one sentence from this piece, make it this one: a username is a handle someone can message you with, without either of you sharing a phone number. ## How reserving works, and what it costs Reserving a username is free and takes about a minute. On your phone, go to Settings, then Account, then Username. You pick your handle there. Reservations opened worldwide on 29 June 2026, so this is recent enough that many good names are still available, especially outside the biggest cities and industries. The rules are simple. Your handle can be 3 to 35 characters, using lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores, with at least one letter. Usernames are not case-sensitive, so Riverstone and riverstone are the same name. Uniqueness is global across all of WhatsApp, which means the same first-come logic that applied to domain names in the nineties now applies to your business name here. ## The part most people get wrong: there is no search Here is the fact that deflates most of the hype. WhatsApp has no directory and no search for usernames. Nobody can browse a list of businesses, and nobody can type riverstone into a search box and find you. A stranger has to be given your exact handle, by you, somewhere else: on your website, on a receipt, on a shop window, in an email. This means a username is a thing you share, not a way to be found. If someone told you a username would make your business discoverable on WhatsApp the way a Google Business profile is discoverable on Search, that is not what this is. It is closer to a custom short link than a listing. The value is in the handle being clean and memorable once you have put it in front of someone, not in pulling people in on its own. ## The optional key, in plain terms When you set a username you can also turn on an optional key: a short extra code a stranger must enter along with your handle before their first message to you goes through. Think of it as a second lock on the front door for people you have never spoken to. The key does not apply to most people you actually deal with. Anyone who already has your phone number, anyone you have chatted with before, anyone who shares a group with you, and anyone who scans your QR code can reach you as they always did. The key only gates brand-new strangers who arrive with nothing but your handle. For most small businesses it is unnecessary; if your handle is public and you get a lot of spam from strangers, it is a lever to pull. ## What a username does not do It does not hide your phone number on a business account. On a WhatsApp Business account, your number stays visible to people you chat with. The username is about having a clean, memorable, hard-to-impersonate handle, not about privacy from your customers. It also does not change anything for your existing customers. Everyone who already has your number saved, or who has messaged you before, keeps doing exactly what they have always done. No one needs to update a contact card, and no conversations move anywhere. If you never told a single person your username, nothing about your day would change. The feature only matters when you start putting the handle in places where new customers can act on it. ## Why the rush, if the feature is this quiet Because uniqueness is global and first-come, and because there is no search, the only real risk is that someone else takes your name first. Meta pre-reserved the famous ones, the global brands and celebrity names, precisely to stop squatters. Nobody pre-reserved the long tail. Maria's Bakery on the corner, your dental practice, your plumbing company: these are exactly the names nobody protected, and they are exactly the ones an opportunistic person can register tomorrow. The failure mode is concrete. A customer hears about you from a friend, checks the handle you printed on a flyer, and messages an account that is not you. Because there is no verification badge tied to ordinary usernames and no search to disambiguate, the impersonation risk is real for any business whose name is even slightly generic. Reserving the exact name and the obvious near-misses is cheap insurance against that. ## What to do this morning Open Settings, then Account, then Username on the phone that runs your business account, and claim your exact business name first. Then claim the near-misses: the version with your city, the version without the period, the one-word shorthand customers actually say out loud. You can reserve more than one, and unused handles cost nothing. After that, put the handle where new customers will see it: your website footer, your invoices, your Instagram bio, the sticker on the counter. A username nobody has been given is a username doing nothing. And if you are already running customer conversations on WhatsApp, the handle is just the front door. What happens behind it, how messages get answered when you are busy, is where the real work is. We built Calypso for that part: every WhatsApp conversation lands on a board with a clear objective and its own knowledge, so an agent can work the columns and hand off to you when a human judgment is needed. But the board only fills up if people can find the door. Reserve the name first.**Sources ** Links used to ground claims in this answer. - **1**
